OCTOBER IS NATIONAL BOOK MONTH - HERE ARE THE BOOKS WE LOVE!

October 19, 2020

As the summer slips away and outside activities turn inside, it's the perfect time to curl up with your favorite beverage, a comfy blanket and a good book.

Reading is one of the best things you can do for your mind and your mental health. And research shows it greatly improves your spelling, vocabulary and even memory!

So, we've asked our team about their favorite books, genres, spots to read and reading apps. Here's what they had to say...

SALLY STRATTON
Sally's go-to genre is historical fiction because she enjoys compelling stories that teach her about new cultures, countries or events. She just finished reading three books by Conrad Richter that tells a story of how a family's land evolved from forest to farmland to towns over the course of multiple generations.

ALISON FORCHE
Alison is reading, "Indistractable" by Nir Eyal, a book that teaches techniques for preventing the digital world from depriving people from other priorities. Her favorite business book is Simon Sinek's, "Start with Why" because purpose is vital to business, and it resonates with employees, customers and clients.

Alison's favorite genre is non-fiction, such biographies, business and self-improvement. She loves to read anywhere in the sun, but especially her deck, out in nature, by the ocean or near the mountains. She uses both Audible and Libby apps.

ERIK ROEMER
Erik's favorite business book is "Good to Great" because the research findings explained in the book help him to better address the needs of his clients.

He enjoys reading mystery, thriller, fantasy, and historical non-fiction in the comfort of his La-Z-Boy chair, where a good book transports him into the world he's reading about.

JOCELYN SPERKO
Jocelyn's favorite business book was a Gerber Book Club book, "Emotional Intelligence 2.0" because it brought value to both her personal and professional life. The book encouraged fun word games where they learned and made up words that described emotions. Among her favorite words are:

  • GIGIL: (n) An overwhelming urge to squeeze or pinch something because it is so freaking cute
  • SCHMALTZY: (adj) having excessive sentimentality
  • FORELSKET: (n) the intense joy of falling in love

Her all-time favorite reading spot is next to the fireplace in the house she grew up in with a glass of red wine and a soft blanket.

ANNIE SCOTT
Annie's favorite book is "In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote, because it combines her fascination with true crime, history and the psychology of people. She enjoys reading anywhere outside whether it's on the beach, on her balcony or lounging comfortably in her hammock.

TRICIA KATZENMOYER
Tricia is currently reading two books, "How to Be an Antiracist" by Ibram X. Kendi, and "Maybe You Should Talk to Someone" by Lori Gottlieb. Both books are encouraging her to look inward and recognize how her thoughts and actions affect her and those around her.

Her favorite genre is realistic fiction because she enjoys reading about relatable characters. She uses the Libby app to check out eBooks and the Kindle app on her phone and iPad.

AMANDA CUMMINS
Amanda is currently reading "Jesus Over Everything" by Lis Whittle and "The Lies that Bind" by Emily Giffin. Her favorite business book is "Emotional Intelligence" because it's great for learning about work with different personalities.

She enjoys reading religious and romance books, and her favorite spot to read them is at the park, the beach or on her front porch. She's a member of a women's bible study and uses the Libby app for reading.
