ASK GERBER: WHY DO I NEED TO INVEST IN HOSTING AN ANNUAL RETREAT FOR MY TEAM?
The first quarter of each year marks a time of assessment for our team. We specifically set aside time at the beginning of each year to step away from the Gerber space, and into a secluded arena, for a chance to dive into everything ‘Gerber’ with an annual company retreat.
Why, you ask?
Well, simply because data tells us to. We’ve all heard the stats; spending time outside of the office boosts creativity.* A successful business lives on innovation, and innovation cannot always happen inside your office walls. Dedicating a few days to separate yourself (and your team) from the day to day workflow can allow for time of reflection and innovation. Here’s why you need to start one, and what you need to cover.
What’s the point?
At Gerber we believe in transparency throughout our organization. We want our entire team to understand our goals, our plan to get there, and the purpose behind it all. An annual retreat is the perfect time to reiterate just that.
Taking time away from the office allows your team to regroup as an organization and allows you, as the business owner, to reignite passion in your employees. That means reminding them why they should be excited about the work your organization is doing and why they’re an integral part of the process.
Now, what to talk about…
A large piece contributing to the level of success for your retreat is how transparent you want to be with your team. Transparency in numbers and the “why” behind your company’s efforts enforces trust between you, as the business owner, and your employees. Transparency and purpose are crucial (que the millennials in your office who thrive for purpose in their work).
Use this time to re-instill your company values and purpose across your organization. Celebrate topping financial benchmarks (climate affecting decisions, revenue, goals) and recruiting new talent for your team. Try to share future growth plans and touch on how your current employees will grow as the company grows.
Step one may simply be to ask your team what they want to know. What questions are unanswered? What goals are unclear? Allow your leadership team to have a hand in helping to develop the agenda and scheduled content.
