With every relationship comes a process; vetting, courting, and so on. You have to test your compatibility before moving forward. Ironically, identifying a strategic partner is no different.
So what is there to consider when looking for a new (or evaluating an existing) professional partnership (accountant, lawyer, etc.)?
IT TAKES TIMEA strategic partner should not simply be someone you hire to get a single job completed. You must find someone who will have your best interests in mind and align your planning with your short term and long term goals. That means starting with an extensive “interview” process to outline not only financial expectations, but an understanding of boundaries and ensuring the partner has a deep understanding of the goals you want to achieve.
BE STRATEGICJust because finding the right partner takes time does not mean you have to embark on your journey blindly. Clearly outline your expectations, and more importantly, the vision of where you want to go.

The personality match between you and your strategic partner plays into the compatibility of your relationship. – Sounds like a no-brainer, right? Keep an eye out for the red flags that can be a deal breaker for your relationship. Not only on a professional level, but personally as well. Do you have similar interests or values?
Try asking some of the following questions:
· What kind of clients do you work with?
· Who will I be working with?
· What are your core values?
· How frequently are you available to meet?
· Are you available year-round, outside of 8AM to 5PM?
· How do you bill for your services? Hourly? Retainer?
KNOW WHEN IT IS TIME TO WALK AWAYSo often the people you needed during growth and survival modes are not the same people to take you to the next level – and that’s okay! Don’t let emotions get in the way. The most important piece is having professional advisors who understand where you are going.
