A professional manager has strengths and expertise that you and your current team don’t have. It’s cheaper and faster to hire someone with the experience you need than it is to train someone on your team. A professional manager has worked in a bigger business, and knows the answers to questions you don’t even know to ask. You don’t know what you don’t know, but the professional manager doesknow, and can help move your business forward.

But don’t give up your business’s culture. A professional manager has the potential to radically change it, so it’s critical to hire the right person. Talk to a recruiting or HR professional who really understands how to fill the gap between where you are today and where you want your business to be in the future. They can help thoroughly interview and scrutinize each candidate and recommend who would succeed in your current culture.

 

As a shareholder of a company, it’s your duty and responsibility to nurture the professional manager’s transition to your business’s culture. Manage the shift to professional management while keeping the entrepreneurial spirit alive. If you are successful, you may even hire more professional managers. And you’ll enjoy your business’s rapid growth with less stress, anxiety and headaches.
